Our house hadn't all sailed together at the same beach yet so we decided to make an effort to do so today. Was pissing it down when we left the house. Checked out Balephuil first. Bolt onshore.

Crossapol - was cross-on, rain clearing, mushy waves, starboard tack...classic south-coast conditions!

I started off rigging the 5.9 but again the wind picked up whilst rigging so I put up the 5.2 instead. That was the third time I had rigged the 5.9 this week and not used it.

Started off on the Bee. Was psyched up for forwards today and Martin was egging me on (filming with Hylts' camera from the beach, due to his buggered hand). But all forward "attempts" today were utter shite. This week has really made me think that port will be my better side for forwards, cos maybe I'll sheet in more with my stronger right hand on that side.

With the wind continuing to pick up the Bee was soon too big so after about 20 mins I changed down to the Quatro. All good!!! Well powered up on the 5.2 fully downhauled. Waves were a bit crap so jumping and riding was limited. But with the wind swinging more cross-shore, some attempted front-side rides were possible, and on the Quatro any hint of down-the-line sailing is just pure joy... :)

But best bit of the session were my first ever back loop attempts woohoo!!! On some of my vertical jumps I managed to have the look over the front shoulder, properly spot the landing...then splat onto my side. So very limited rotation, but really got the "hanging-in-the-air" feeling whilst spotting the landing....kewuuuwuuuwuuuell!!

Whilst we were out having fun Martin had driven round to Gott Bay to find out what was going on. He talked to the judges and apparently on his advice they decided to run a wave comp at Crossapol in the afternoon...

So around 2pm the whole competition entourage turned up. The wind had really picked up now so I changed down to my 4.5, but was able to keep my 5.2 rigged. Annoyingly we all had to bugger off upwind of the comp area, which was set out exactly where we had been sailing previously. I found out that I was in a heat in about 45 mins...then the heavens opened.

Fortunately the rain cleared before my heat. The wind was lighter now so I changed back to the 5.2. 3 different jumps were to count, and no wave-rides, only 5 minutes for the heat. I got stuck in the white-water for the first half of the heat, but then managed to get going, and right at the end tried another back loop! It was fairly crap, the jump was no way near high enough, and again I landed on my side and my head/ear took a massive very sore splat. But...I got scored for it!!! 2/10!!! My highest score for any individual manouever so far!!!

Obviously...I didn't get through my heat. Was annoying that I had been drawn in the much harder heat of the two, with Seb/Mark/Martin. Only three people were in the other heat and with a bit of luck I reckon I could have got through that one.

Had a quick sail on the Quatro/5.2 after my heat but the wind was dropping so came in after only a couple of runs.

Great day. Lots of solid powered up wave-board blasting, and back-loop attempts! But no forwards, so only 4 stars.
